  • The plot: An ex-con, on the day of his release from prison, goes on a rampage, killing everyone responsible for the murder of his brother.

Faster is a streamlined, minimalistic revenge movie heavily influenced by classic 70s exploitation and grindhouse cinema. In terms of modern exploitation movies, it’s closer to a Robert Rodriguez than Quentin Tarantino movie. Though it has some stylistic touches (such as leaving all the main characters unnamed), it lacks the self-conscious, ironic, hipster-friendly appeal that characterize QT’s movies.

Faster doesn’t waste time getting to the good stuff. It’s loaded with action sequences, and it periodically introduces bits of characterization without ever being dialogue-heavy or slowing down the movie. Good actors can make this work, and Faster has a pretty good cast. I never thought I would like a professional wrestler, but Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) is actually fairly charismatic and fun to watch. Like Vin Diesel and Jason Statham, I consider his movies to be forgettable guilty pleasures, much like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, back in the 80s and 90s.

Although derivative, it’s still enjoyable for what it is, and it works well. If you like Spaghetti Westerns, neo-noir, and/or pulpy crime novels, I’d recommend Faster. Otherwise, you’ll probably find it a bit shallow and violent.
