In a broken city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) seeks redemption and revenge after being double-crossed and then framed by its most powerful figure, the mayor (Russell Crowe). Billy’s relentless pursuit of justice, matched only by his streetwise toughness, makes him an unstoppable force – and the mayor’s worst nightmare.

  • Great cast with Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones. “Broken City” started poorly but I hoped it might pick up. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The plot line is too obvious, nothing special. Also some pieces are boring, without anything happening. Big cast, but no big deal… I expected more from this movie!

  • Broken City is one of your typical winter releases that the studio wants to dump out as soon as it can. Not all winter releases are bad; some of them end up being winners, but this is average stuff that I forgot about as soon as I finished watching it. The experience is not fun at all. It has a heavy storyline, but it didn’t engross me all that much, and ended up depressing me more than anything. Mark Whalberg’s character is almost as despicable as Russell Crowe’s. His character is about redemption, but I didn’t care if he got it or not. His performance is fine, but I couldn’t relate with his character all that much because it lacked certain morals. I got that it reeked of desperation, but I still wasn’t able to empathize with him all that much. Russell Crowe plays a good sleazeball, and does good as the corrput Mayor, but his performance is more worthy of a better film in my opinion. Catharine Zeta-Jones is certainly sexy, and does well in her role. The ending thinks it is giving you closure. I got closure alright… I was glad I was done with it.

Final Thoughts: Any compliments? Hmm. It never really bored me, but it failed to engage me fully. Mark Whalberg is a talented guy, but I just hope he chooses his projects more wisely from now on. If you decide to check it out, be prepared for a dreary ride

  • Ever heard of The Hughes Brothers? No? Well they directed films such as; “Menace II Society” (which I’m sure many of you are familiar with), “Dead Presidents” (with Chris Tucker) and “The Book of Eli” (with Denzel Washington). Well Allen Hughes took a break away from directing films with his twin brother Albert and ventured on his first solo directing effort which is Broken City.

Broken City is a political crime drama which revolves around a cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) who turns private detective after being in a controversial shooting incident and is kept out of jail by Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe). But there’s more to the Mayor than meets the eye. After being paid to investigate if the Mayors wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is having an affair Taggart ends up seeking revenge after he is double crossed.
